Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Marocchino has been a Professor of Social Sciences at California State University Maritime since 1990 and has also taught at University of California Davis and Stanford University. She pioneered her campus's first service-learning course, "Dying: The Final Stage of Living" in conjunction with Kaiser Vallejo's Hospice Department in 1999. Dr. Marocchino is certified in the Study of Loss and Grief though UC Berkeley Extension and is a Fellow in Thanatology through ADEC. She founded The Nikki Hospice Foundation for Pets in 1996, operates a nation-wide pet hospice referral service and pet loss support helpline, and organized two international symposia on veterinary hospice care in 2008 and 2009. In 2005, she and her husband were awarded the President's Lifetime Volunteer Call to Service Award for their work with The Nikki Hospice Foundation for Pets. Dr. Marocchino has written numerous articles, provided interviews on television and radio, and continues to give presentations nationwide on animal hospice besides caring for the special-needs feral cat colony that she and her husband have adopted on the premises of The NHFP.
