Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Toce began her interest in ethics and palliative care during her neonatal fellowship at University of Wisconsin. During her 23 years at Saint Louis University, she established the Ethics Committee at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, was the PI for a Robert Wood Johnson grant concerning end of life care, and was the medical director of FOOTPRINTS, an advance care planning model pediatric palliative care program. Since moving to Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse WI, she has established a neonatal consultation program for pregnant women who have fetal anomalies, helped establish a perinatal palliative care program, and is part of a task force to establish pediatric palliative care services. She is a member of the hospital ethics committee. She has been on the leadership group of the Children’s Project on Palliative/Hospice Services, the pediatric arm of NHPCO, since its inception. She is on the ethics committee of NHPCO and is part of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She has spoken locally, regionally, and nationally on perinatal and pediatric ethics, palliative care, and end of life care topics. She continues to be fulfilled by caring for sick newborns and their families.
