Biographical Sketch:
John Gillman, Ph.D., is a chaplain and dually certified supervisor of Clinical Pastoral Education at VITAS Innovative Hospice Care in San Diego. He is also a lecturer in Religious Studies at San Diego State University where he has taught for over 20 years. John received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Louvain, Belgium. He has extensive experience as a CPE Supervisor at a nationally recognized hospice, a large medical center, and a community-based CPE program. He has lectured nationally and internationally (Belgium, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan). Most recently, he has presented on the topic of “Transformations of Despair” at the 2010 ACPE National Conference on April 23 in Kansas City, MO. He also presented on the following topics: “Spiritual and Cultural Sensitivity in End-of-Life Decision Making” (NHPCO’s 6th Clinical Team Conference, April 21, 2005, Atlanta, GA), “Enhancing Quality Care through Spiritual and Cultural Sensitivity” (NHPCO’s 7th Clinical Team Conference, April 26, 2006, San Diego, CA), “Attachment Theory at the End of Life” (Annual Conference of the Association of Professional Chaplains, April 26, 2007, Burlingame, CA). He has published several articles and two books in the areas of Pastoral Care and Biblical Studies, including Luke: Stories of Joy and Salvation (2002).
