Friday, October 7, 2011: 4:15 PM-5:15 PM
Primary Presenter:
Bernard Fischer, RPh, CPh, FASCP
Area of Emphasis: Clinical Management
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the comparative potency of various opioids and how they relate to each other
2. Calculate equivalent doses required for opioid rotations
3. Discuss the intended action of the various dosage forms and routes of administration of specific opioids used in managing pain
As patients encounter the end of life, physiological and clinical changes that occur provide many challenges to the clinical care giver. These changes frequently require alterations of therapy, not the least of which is the prescribing different medications to maintain and achieve the comfort we strive to provide. This session will develop the nurse’s skill in calculating the conversions of various opioids to equal potencies and strengths of other drugs of this class. The focus is to master the techniques involved in correctly dosing these narcotics when comparing class to class, dose to dose and route and frequency of administration.
