Area of Emphasis: Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement

1. List the steps of the FMEA process
2. Discuss the advantages of a proactive approach to performance improvement
3. Evaluate high-risk internal processes and apply the FMEA tools to decrease organizational risk
A Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) was undertaken to deconstruct the process of prescription management, identifying high risk steps, areas requiring tightened controls and processes to improve customer service and increase patient safety. The FMEA experience enhanced the script management process but also triggered subsequent improvements in patient medication rights and responsibilities with unique opportunities to improve clinical care. The facilitators will present the FMEA concept with the goal of FMEA application into many areas of quality improvement.
