Tuesday, November 6, 2012: 4:15 PM-5:15 PM
Primary Presenter:
Karen Vrtunski, MSSA, LISW-S, ACHP-SW
Area of Emphasis: Psychosocial Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Outline findings from professional literature on elder maltreatment in general and specifically at the end of life
2. Describe the barriers to recognizing and addressing elder abuse, neglect and exploitation in end-of-life care
3. Discuss techniques for establishing collaborative connections with community providers of protective services
Even though we may not want to believe that dying individuals can be abused, neglected or exploited by caregivers, experts in the field of elder abuse suggest otherwise. Individuals nearing the end of life are often at high risk for various types of maltreatment due to their increasing needs for care. This session will review the current literature on this important topic, outline signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation in end-of-life care, identify barriers to recognizing and reporting suspected incidents of elder maltreatment and share how collaboration with community providers of protective services can provide critical and essential support for effective interventions in these challenging situations.
