Monday, November 5, 2012: 10:15 AM-11:45 AM
Primary Presenter:
Joy Berger, FT, DMA, BCC, MT-BC
Area of Emphasis: Interdisciplinary Team
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe emotional intelligence and why it matters for the hospice interdisciplinary team (IDT) in delivering quality patient care
2. Identify the four, sequenced skills of emotional intelligence
3. Relate Emotional Intelligence’s four skills to IDT cohesiveness and collaboration as described by the CoPs for interdisciplinary care planning and NHPCO’s Interdisciplinary Team Competencies Grid
Team cohesiveness and collaboration are core competencies for providing quality patient care.  Too often, we assume our team’s communications and relationships are just fine, when in reality we’ve let our frustrations and interpersonal conflicts obstruct effective, patient/family-centered care.  The field of Emotional Intelligence provides researched, workplace skills for integrating our essential “heart of hospice” values with today’s “mind of hospice” regulatory compliance and data-driven demands.  By developing “emotional intelligence” and using “intelligent emotions,” hospice and palliative care professionals can shift intense, reactive conflicts into empathic, responsive problem-solving.
