Area of Emphasis: Regulatory/ Compliance
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the current national utilization of GIP and Continuous Care with a focus on changes over time and state variation
2. Cite eligibility criteria for the General Inpatient and Continuous Care levels
3. Create and critically review patient record documentation that provides evidence for admission to or continuation of GIP or Continuous Care
Between 2000 and 2009, there has been a striking increase in rate of utilization of the General Inpatient (GIP) level of care. GIP use is currently a focus of OIG review.  This raises the question – what is the right rate of GIP use? Though Continuous Care has not experienced such growth nor risen to the level of such scrutiny, both need the understanding and attention of the field. This session will present a review of existing regulations, approaches for determination of GIP and Continuous Care eligibility, best practices for documentation and recommendations for auditing your current use of GIP and Continuous Care services. A goal is that you use this information to benchmark your hospice program’s current use of GIP and Continuous Care.
