Primary Presenter:

Determining what aspects of care and coverage for which hospice providers are responsible has become an issue of critical importance. Hospices face increased scrutiny as regulators—and policymakers on Capitol Hill—have ongoing concerns that some providers may be defining their scope of responsibility too narrowly. This session will clarify this complex issue and properly frame the way we should evaluate both care that patients may need and hospices’ scope of responsibility in providing that care.

Learning Objectives:
1. Distinguish between related and unrelated conditions in hospice care
2. Describe why a single prognosis is often too narrow for determining the scope of services for which hospice has financial responsibility
3. Discuss the NHPCO algorithm for determining relatedness of diagnosis and conditions in hospice care
