Harvey Chochinov, tomorrow’s plenary speaker, will lead this session proving a novel approach to understanding and therefore enhancing how to respond effectively to patients who are experiencing illness-related distress.  Clinical team members will learn valuable strategies to enhance their communication and intervention with patients and families using a case-based approach.

1. Cite a study which asked participants to describe specific elements of therapeutic effectiveness
2. Describe an integrated model of optimal therapeutic effectiveness
3. Illustrate the model, by considering case examples that highlight how the model can be applied in clinical practice and teaching
