Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Maison has been practicing hospice and palliative medicine for over 13 years, working as a fulltime hospice and palliative medicine physician since 2001. He is currently the Medical Director of the Palliative Care Program at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended medical school at Georgetown University and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor society. He trained in Internal Medicine at California Pacific Medical Center where he also served as Chief Resident. He was named both Intern and Resident of the year while at California Pacific Medical Center. He also received the Gamble Fellowship for being outstanding educator of the year. He is a nationally recognized speaker who has taught extensively at the local, regional, state and national level, and he has delivered keynote addresses on the issues of establishing palliative care programs and hospice’s role within the communities they serve. He also has published articles on issues related to hospice and end-of-life care. Nationally, he serves in leadership positions with the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), including the National Physician Section Leader for the National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals at NHPCO. He also is a Master Facilitator for the Education for Providers of End of Life Care (EPEC), an organization that has trained thousands of healthcare providers in the provision of effective, excellent end-of-life care. In 2006, Dr. Maison was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, one of approximately 200 physicians with this distinction nationwide.
