Biographical Sketch:
Cheryl Arenella M.D., M.P.H. received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and received her masters degree in public health from George Washington University. She worked as a contracted Cancer Education Program Specialist in the Office of Communication and Education (OCE) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 2005 through 2013. In this role, she works on palliative education outreach programs for health professionals, and was the project lead for dissemination of the Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Oncology (EPEC™-O) curriculum out of NCI. In addition, she served as a Consultant Medical Director for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization from 2006 to 2010 working in the areas of quality and compliance. She retired from Capital Hospice in 2005 after twenty five years of “front-line” experience in caring for hospice and palliative care patients and in training physicians and other health professionals as part of her Medical Director responsibilities. She served as a trustee of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine for 8 yrs. from 1996 through 2004, where she was instrumental in helping to develop a certifying examination, a maintenance of certification program, and in preparing the specialty for incorporation into the American Board of Medical Specialties before her term expired in 2004. She also works as a health consultant for hospice and palliative care programs in the areas of compliance, quality and medical staff development.
