Biographical Sketch:
Martha Ann Rutland, DMin, BCC, ACPE, joined VITAS Innovative Hospice Care® in 2000 as Director of Clinical Pastoral Education. Through Martha’s leadership, nearly half of VITAS’ 46 hospice programs throughout the U.S. offer ACPE accredited learning opportunities. Ordained a United Methodist minister in 1972, Martha has written on pastoral care in the hospice setting: “Spirituality at the End of Life” for Finding Our Way: Living with Dying in America, 2001; The Journal of Pastoral Care, including “When Dying is Living: Hospice Pastoral Care and Education;” and for Insights, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) magazine. A member of the Spiritual Care Steering Committee for NHPCO, Martha serves as their liaison to the Association of Professional Chaplains with whom she is also certified. She earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her greatest joys are her novelist husband, John, and their twin sons, Andrew and Michael.
