Biographical Sketch:
Now “semi-retired” Jay Mahoney founded Summit Business Group, LLC in 1998, providing consulting services to hospices, home health agencies, long term care facilities and health systems across the country. Mahoney also established the Hospice Compliance Network, and the Hospice House Network. Mahoney began his hospice career as Executive Director of Boulder County Hospice in 1982, and emerged as a state and national leader in the then nascent hospice movement. Boulder County Hospice became one of the first hospices in the country to become a Medicare certified hospice provider and to have its own general inpatient care unit. In 1984, Mahoney left the hospice to head the National Hospice Organization (NHO) now called the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). A position he held for more than 14 years. Mahoney has lectured extensively on hospice care nationally and around the world. Articles and comments written by Mahoney have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, American Medical News and the Journal of Palliative Medicine. He has co-authored or edited several manuals and books, including: One Patient, One Day: Making Your Hospice a Leader in End of Life Care with co-authors Mary Michal and Larry Beresford. With Marcia Lattanzi-Licht, and Galen Miller, Mahoney co-authored The Hospice Choice: In Pursuit of a Peaceful Death, published by Simon & Schuster. He also edited and contributed chapters to: Hospice Operations: Resources for Managing a Hospice Program of Care. Additionally, Mahoney has provided testimony related to hospice care before numerous Congressional committees and Administration Task Forces. Mahoney received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Colorado. His honors and awards include the Founders Award from the National Hospice Foundation, the Inspector GeneralĂ‚Â’s Integrity Award from the HHS Office of the Inspector General, the AdministratorĂ‚Â’s Achievement Award, from the (now) Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Colorado.
