Palliative Care in Advanced Heart Failure: A Case Presentation

Wednesday, July 9, 2014: 3:30 PM-4:30 PM
Primary Presenter:
David Tribble, MD, FAAFP/CAQHPM
Area of Emphasis: Clinical/Medical Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe and understand the approach to end-stage heart failure
2. Develop the benefit - vs - burden argument for possible therapies
3. Identify palliative goals and describe means for accomplishing them
Advanced heart failure provides a significant challenge to the provision of palliative and hospice care. Many clinical programs shy away from caring for patients receiving advanced therapies for heart failure or seek to discontinue most of the patient's medications resulting in worsening symptom burdens and premature death.  This session will address the palliative medicine/usual care interface, particularly as it applies to patients with heart failure.
