Palliative Care Consultations Prior to Destination-Therapy Left Ventricular Assist Device Insertion

Friday, October 7, 2011: 3:00 PM-4:00 PM
Primary Presenter:
Holli Martinez, FNP-BC, ACHPN
Co-Presenter:
Erin Davis, RN, BSN
Area of Emphasis: Palliative Care Continuum
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe patient selection criteria for destination-therapy left ventricular assist devices in end-stage heart failure
2. Discuss survival, quality of life and complications associated with destination-therapy left ventricular assist device insertion
3. Recognize the value for preoperative palliative care consultation in this population
For patients with end-stage heart failure, receiving a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) has the potential to add significant quality and years to the patient's life. However, recipients are often elderly with multiple medical problems and are at risk of perioperative complications that could result in a diminished quality of life. This presentation will highlight the collaboration between the University of Utah Palliative Care Service and the Cardiac Mechanical Support Program in conducting treatment goal discussions with potential LVAD patients in the preoperative period.
