Primary Presenter:
Patricia Goodwin, ACSW, LCSW, ACHP-SW
Area of Emphasis: Psychosocial Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify advanced assessment skills and tools that reveal underlying patient/family issues
2. Distinguish ways to formulate effective approaches and care plans for the IDG around complex psychosocial situations/issues
3. Describe ways to translate strategies for managing challenging circumstances into positive growth and meaningful experiences for staff
As hospice services expand to broader populations, situations encountered with challenging patients and families are increasing. Psychosocial issues impact the ability to provide effective symptom management, satisfy patients and families and nurture professional growth. Advanced social work assessment and intervention skills are needed to meet unique needs within the boundaries of organizational practice and the interdisciplinary team. With a shift in focus and in-depth understanding and acceptance, hospice staff members can often transform challenging situations into life-changing experiences for patients and families and spark an energizing, expanded sense of compassion and competency in themselves.
