Friday, October 7, 2011: 1:15 PM-2:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Fredda Wasserman, MA, MPH, LMFT, CT
Co-Presenter:
Norine Dresser, MA
Area of Emphasis: Psychosocial Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Differentiate between phrases that enhance end-of-life communications and those that limit conversation
2. Demonstrate their ability to assess patients’ and families’ readiness to have an open conversation about death
3. Facilitate meaningful dialogue between patients and their dear ones at the end of life
When someone faces the end of life, taking time to say a meaningful goodbye to their dear ones may prove to be one of the most poignant experiences of the relationship. Yet so few people feel prepared to have these intimate conversations. This experiential workshop will help professionals, families and friends enhance healing communications as death approaches by answering questions such as: When do we begin an open dialogue about death? What can we say that will not imply that we have given up all hope? How do we say a final goodbye? Examples from true-life experiences will demonstrate how to have tender, honest and even light-hearted discussions about the end of life and death.
