Windows and Mirrors: A Look into the Extraordinary World of the Dying

Friday, October 7, 2011: 1:15 PM-2:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Annette Childs, PhD
Area of Emphasis: Psychosocial Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify common themes/behaviors that indicate the dying are experiencing some of the phenomenon inherent to Nearing Death Awareness (NDA)
2. Discuss the metaphorical language the dying often use to communicate as death becomes imminent
3. Identify common themes in death bed visions and describe research data that provides a framework for understanding how common these visions are
This presentation will explore some of the psycho-spiritual experiences common to the liminal period between life and death. Numerous case examples from the presenter’s 20 years of work with the dying will be used to show the rich, symbolic and transcendent world that unfolds for many at life's end. Topics to  be explored include Nearing Death Awareness , death bed visions, symbolic language and other psycho-spiritual experiences common among the dying. We will discuss the many ways that traditional medical models pathologize these very normal and adaptive experiences among the dying and how this negates the healing inherent in this phenomenon for both the dying and the grieving.
