Crossing the Lines: Real Life Stories of Hospice Staff Boundary Violations and What We Can Learn From Them

1. Define why professional boundaries are needed
2. List five guiding questions to assist you in determining if your actions are within professional boundaries
3. Provide managers with tools to utilize in their interactions with their staff when they cross the line
This session will use real life situations to illustrate principles of maintaining professional boundaries and the potential problems that can exist when they are crossed. The audience will participate in analyzing each situation for boundary violations and discuss how managers can effectively deal with staff members who have been involved in these boundary crossings. Participants will be introduced to the Just Culture algorithm as a means of determining a fair and well thought-out response to boundary violations which promote staff accountability while minimizing an adversarial response.
