Thursday, October 6, 2011: 2:45 PM-3:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Jennifer Ballentine, MA
Area of Emphasis: Advances in Pain and Symptom Management
Learning Objectives:
1. Articulate the premise of Palliative Sedation Therapy and ethically justify the use or rejection of palliative sedation in regard to existential suffering
2. Explain the relationship between spiritual angst and existential suffering, thus recognizing the transformative nature of meaning
3. Utilize available spiritual assessment tools to aid in identifying the source of spiritual angst and the subsequent existential suffering
The discussion of palliative sedation typically prompts an emotionally charged debate, particularly when suggested as an appropriate intervention for existential suffering. Unlike physical suffering caused by refractory symptoms, existential suffering is not resolved by pharmacological interventions. The discernment of meaning is the balm the soul seeks when suffering existentially, a process requiring intention, awareness and spiritual support. You are invited to explore the challenging ethical issues which must be considered when contemplating palliative sedation for the mitigation of existential suffering.
