Step Right Up! Getcha Competencies Here: Ensuring Clinical Competency for the Entire IDG

Friday, October 7, 2011: 1:15 PM-2:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
B. Darlene Avery, MDiv, LCSW
Co-Presenter:
Angela Waterbury, RN, BSN, CHPN
Area of Emphasis: Clinical Management
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the positive outcomes possible for a clinical competency program
2. Identify steps required to develop and implement a comprehensive clinical competency program and observe mock competency evaluations for nursing and psycho-spiritual staff
3. Set goals and begin evaluation to develop and implement a clinical competency program in your own practice or agency
Even if you have a thorough orientation and in-service program, are you “secretly haunted” – or openly at a loss – about how to articulate and evaluate the competence of patient care staff? Are you committed to continuously improving your own competence as a dedicated hospice worker? What about evaluating social work and spiritual care, so often claimed to be “un-measurable?” Come discuss the regulatory and practice standards for competent hospice care in all IDG disciplines. Discover resources that are already out there to help you develop clinical competencies, and how to develop competencies specific to your community or agency needs. Learn methods you can use to quantifiably test all IDG members’ knowledge and skills, according to their disciplines. Consider how competency testing can equip both patient care staff and managers to gain meaningful feedback that improves patient/family care and satisfaction.
