4.
For the past 30 years, research has been steadily accumulating to demonstrate that caring has its costs. We now know that working with others who suffer from  pain, grief,  and trauma can have negative effects on the caregiver - many of which are potentially debilitating. When extreme levels of distress are encountered in patients and family members, our compassion can be strained and the demands of our helping relationships can exceed the resources we have available to us. This session draws upon recent theory and applications in the areas of compassion fatigue, burnout,  resilience and healthy team functioning  to help us meet these challenges.
