Evaluation of End-of-Life Care at a Comprehensive Community Cancer Institute

Friday, October 7, 2011: 10:45 AM-11:45 AM
Primary Presenter:
David E. Cowall, MD
Area of Emphasis: Research (research presentations are solicited for all conference topics)
Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss how benchmarking data can be applied to end-of-life cancer care
2. Describe how a single community cancer institute's intensity of care indicators compared to published benchmark
3. Compare and contrast survival from diagnosis to death, ICU admissions and hospital deaths in patients who were and were not referred to hospice.
Clinical event data with and without hospice referral were extracted  from a random  sample of deaths from a single community cancer institute.  Survival from diagnosis to death and the intensity of end-of-life care were measured in both groups.
