Is Hospice As We Know It Terminally Ill? Getting Back to "A Special Way of Caring"

Friday, October 7, 2011: 10:45 AM-11:45 AM
Primary Presenter:
Gary Gardia, MEd, LCSW, CT
Area of Emphasis: Interdisciplinary Team
Learning Objectives:
1. List three challenges we face nationally that could lead to a sense that hospice care is redundant or unnecessary when considering issues related to funding
2. Discuss two dynamics that pull hospice care away from core concepts such as holistic and interdisciplinary care and move us closer to the medical model
3. Explain the concept of “exceptionalism” as it applies to end-of-life care
It has been said "The future of mankind is not determined by the best of us but by the worst of us."  In hospice we need to assure, now more than ever, that our future is being determined by the best of us, yet we face many obstacles. Hanging on to the very heart of our "special way of caring" -  holistic interdisciplinary care - may be at the top of the list. Whatever your role in end-of-life care, come learn how to assist in guiding the future in a way that is consistent with the vision of our hospice pioneers.
