Medication Discontinuation Syndromes: Avoiding Increased Symptom Burden

Friday, October 7, 2011: 10:45 AM-11:45 AM
Primary Presenter:
Charles Wellman, MD, FAAHPM
Co-Presenter:
J. Brandon Walters, MD
Area of Emphasis: Clinical/Medical Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize that medication withdrawal doesn't always reduce a patient's symptom burden and may unintentionally increase suffering
2. Identify several medications that are associated with significant withdrawal syndromes and be able to describe these syndromes
3. Describe methods by which some medication withdrawal syndromes can be avoided
At the end of life many patients lose the interest and/or the ability to swallow their prescribed medications.  Discontinuation of some medications, however, may result in significant, symptomatic withdrawal syndromes.  This session will highlight some of these medication withdrawal syndromes and possible ways to avoid increasing a patient's symptom burden.
