Becoming the Student: Dialogue with South Asian Doctors about Hospice's Natural Prevalance in Eastern Cultures

Saturday, October 8, 2011: 11:45 AM-12:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Varun Mehta
Area of Emphasis: Access and Outreach
Learning Objectives:
1. Determine three end-of-life practices of Hindus, Muslims and other eastern religions
2. Discuss the unique perspective of hospice and the responsibility (and guilt) felt by South Asian Physicians
3. Respond effectively to South Asian Physicians' view of end-of-life care and generate new marketing tactics for Asian Physician outreach
To complement the steady growth of South Asian physicians (with certain areas now having up to 30%), this pilot program aims to penetrate and engage them in a dialogue about hospice. Many programs have been implemented to reach different ethnicities. Direct-to-consumer marketing has allowed for some misconceptions to be corrected. However, it is the decision-makers, physicians writing the orders, which require a different type of engagement. With many similarities existing between hospice/palliative care and Eastern religions, success (as determined by the meeting of minds and increase in referrals/admissions) in educating and increasing usage of hospice care is natural with Hindu and Muslim physicians from South Asia.
