Nasal Cannula and Dry/Cracked Lips: Formulating Essential Oil Nasal Gels and Lip Balms as Adjunct Therapies

Monday, November 5, 2012: 2:45 PM-3:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Lisa Browder, RA, ICA, CR
Area of Emphasis: Clinical/Medical Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss fixed oils and butters to determine an effective, lubricating base for an essential oil blend
2. Differentiate the useful constituents that would specifically aid in skin care for nasal passages and lips
3. Discuss secondary benefits for comfort and quality of life when patients choose essential oils with multiple treatment capabilities
This presentation will discuss essential oils that are appropriate for patients with dry and/or bleeding nasal passages due to nasal cannulas and for patients with dry, cracked lips. Faculty will explore appropriate fixed oils, infused oils and butters that can be used for blending. The session will focus on the anti-inflammatory, skin regenerative and antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-infectious terpenes, phenols, aldehydes, ketones, esters and alcohols on mucous membranes and some of the possible residual effects of these functional groups on combating oral thrush and calming the central nervous system. Participants will have the opportunity to sample a variety of fixed oils and butters to determine good base blends for use on compromised, delicate tissues.
