Palliative Sedation: When, How and Why

1. Identify the ethical and legal basis for palliative sedation
2. Describe a method to differentiate intractable symptoms
3. Describe the steps and medications utilized when using palliative sedation
Palliative sedation is a much debated intervention in end-of-life care.  Using current research and practice statements, participants will explore when it might be appropriate to consider palliative sedation - discussing the many way patients can experience intractable pain.  Faculty will examine how by describing common methodologies and the physiological effects of palliative sedation on the patient.   Finally, this session will explore ethical issues through a continuum of the medical practioner's intentions and other ethical considerations.
