Co-Presenter:
Alissa Swota, PhD
Area of Emphasis: Pediatric Palliative and End-of-Life Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe bioethical terminology related to decision-making
2. Define the transition of assent to consent when working with the adolescent patient with a life-limiting condition
3. Discuss end-of-life decision-making for teenage patients who possess the mental ability to make their own decisions
With the advancement of medical technology and medicine, children with life-limiting conditions are living into their late adolescent years and early adulthood. With these longer life expectancies comes the conundrum of shifting decision-making from the traditional role of the parent to the patient as they approach their teen years. This session will discuss the continuum of assent to consent for adolescents living with chronic, life-limiting conditions and explore strategies to maintain the partnership between family-patient-healthcare providers.
