Cameron’s Arc: A Tool to Get Your Team Talking About Caring for Dying Children

Tuesday, November 6, 2012: 3:00 PM-4:00 PM
Primary Presenter:
Richard Goldstein, MD
Co-Presenter:
Blyth Lord
Area of Emphasis: Pediatric Palliative and End-of-Life Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Define critical moments in the whole-family care trajectory of a child with a life-limiting illness
2. Identify the community resources needed to effectively support medical home and provide for whole-family care
3. Discuss challenging scenarios in transitioning a family to end-of-life care
The workshop will begin with CAMERON’S ARC, the award-winning film about how exceptional family-centered care was provided by a community pediatrician when he diagnosed a 5-month old patient with Tay-Sachs disease, to her death 18 months later. The workshop will help participants: recognize the skill set needed by the PCP in caring for medically fragile children; describe the role of communication in managing children living with terminal conditions and their families; demonstrate application of patient/family-centered care in family-professional partnerships. Faculty will facilitate a discussion of breaking bad news, providing anticipatory guidance, clarifying care goals, managing pain, and defining a ‘full-life’ for a terminally ill child.
