The nature of hospice assumes the sacredness of life.  Daily exposure to death and dying can make us neglect or forget that we work at the spiritual boundary between worlds in the presence of that which is eternal.  Medicare regulations, financial limitations, administrative policy and medical concerns can predominate in team meetings and block the power of community in client care.  Although the professional team is not a spiritual community, there are spiritual moments that can add depth and meaning to our assessments, treatment goals and plans of care.  When the sanctity of each client life is noticed and the spiritual wisdom of each staff member honored, resources are activated that encourage better decision making and attitudes in our work with clients.  It also strengthens mutual respect, reducing conflict, independence and competition in our teamwork.
