Ethics in Action: Working in the Patient Narrative

Wednesday, November 7, 2012: 10:00 AM-11:00 AM
Primary Presenter:
Patrice Tadel, MSN, RN
Area of Emphasis: Ethics
Learning Objectives:
1. Define ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence and nonmalificience in the context of end-of-life care
2. Verbalize how to draw out the patient narrative and mediate goals that assure the voice of the patient is heard
3. Use specific ethics models to organize discussion of ethical dilemmas and assure ethical principles are met
In spite of ongoing education and reinforcement of ethical principles related to caring for patients and families facing end of life decisions, ethical stress is experienced at the bedside. Reframing the challenges from patient and clinician viewpoints may create growth opportunities for the interdisciplinary team with positive impact on interactions with patient/family and other healthcare workers. Using case studies, audience participation and ethical foundations from an end-of-life perspective, clinical ethics are explored. Boundary setting, mediation and expressing the narrative of the patient are also reviewed.
