Wednesday, November 7, 2012: 11:15 AM-12:15 PM
Primary Presenter:
Terri Maxwell, PhD, APRN
Co-Presenter:
Christine Simmers, PharmD
Area of Emphasis: Regulatory/ Compliance
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the impact of payment-related scrutiny when clinicians make inaccurate related determinations
2. Discuss the diagnosis and clinical factors that should be considered when making individualized, patient-specific related determinations for medications in hospice
3. Identify challenges commonly experienced by hospice clinicians when making patient-specific related determinations
The hospice industry is undergoing increasing payment-related scrutiny to ensure that Medicare is not billed separately for services related to a patient's terminal illness and secondary conditions. Decisions regarding which components of care are related to the terminal illness are an important part of care planning and critical to accurate billing. Through a primarily case-based approach, faculty will describe a decision-making process to ensure that medication related determinations are as accurate as possible and clearly documented in the patient's record.
