Roanoke Room (Westin Kansas City)
Primary Presenter:
Claude Overall
Area of Emphasis: Spiritual Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the components of spiritual wellness and spiritual distress
2. Learn appropriate interventions associated with spiritual distress and its relation to the spiritual wellness assessment
3. Distinguish between spiritual "needs" and "religious" needs
As patients near the end of their lives, spiritual/religious concerns may be awakened or intensified. Spiritual wellness is the attentive, competent, compassionate response to what a person finds most meaningful in relationship to self, others and God. It is acknowledged as his/her spirituality and includes the beliefs and practices that support spiritual wellness. This session will discuss ways in which spiritual wellness can be integrated into hospice care. Elements of spiritual distress will be discussed and interventions will be recommended.
