Liberty Room (Westin Kansas City)
Primary Presenter:
Tamara Vesel, MD
Co-Presenter:
Klara Seiger, RN, BSN, CHPN
Area of Emphasis: Advance in Pain and Symptom Management
Learning Objectives:
1. Use three new skills to help patients who suffer from pain, anxiety and dyspnea
2. Identify three new methods to alleviate suffering of their patients
3. Incorporate non- pharmacological tools into their toolbox for symptom management at the bedside
Palliative care patients frequently experience severe symptoms including pain, anxiety and dyspnea. Unfortunately, evidence-based training in non-pharmacological methods is less available to clinicians than are traditional methods of pain and symptom management.  Strong evidence currently exists for the effectiveness of non-pharmacological methods of symptom management like hypnosis, cognitive-behavior therapy and mindfulness. But many hospice clinicians feel ill-equipped to use these tools. In this session, participants will learn to identify the parameters and match non- pharmacological techniques to patient symptoms of pain, anxiety and dyspnea.  Attendees will develop new skills and gain confidence in using these skills in their own clinical practice.
