Primary Presenter:
Alberto Magana, Rev, Dr
Area of Emphasis: Innovative Service Delivery Models
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify challenges faced by Hispanic patients and hospice providers regarding hospice services
2. Examine the anticipatory grief process and the stories of hope of Hispanic hospice patients
3. Discuss spiritual beliefs with hospice patients by respecting their cultural understanding of death
Research shows that ethnic minorities access hospice care less often than Caucasians. In part, this issue has been attributed to the lack of cultural competence among hospice staff. This project examines the meaning attached to the stories of hope for Hispanic Hospice patients and how their belief system about the future has an impact on their anticipatory grief  experience and how  staff can provide a culturally sensitive care. Assuming that hospice is a model of end-of-life care for Latinos, how might hospice providers present and adapt those services in an integrated manner so that hospice values support the values of this particular group?
