3. Educate and lead their organizations in informed discussion and policy development initiatives addressing VSED
For patients who wish to exercise greater control over the time and circumstances of their death, voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED) is a legal option in all fifty states.  However, legal, ethical and clinical questions about this option are under addressed in the peer-reviewed literature.  This interactive session, led by clinicians and scholars from multiple disciplines, clarifies the concept of VSED, explores questions surrounding the practice, and offers a framework through which hospice organizations can develop policies and procedures to support patients, family members, and staff members.
