Co-Presenter:
John Manfredonia, DO, FACOFP, FAAHPM
Area of Emphasis: Workforce Excellence
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe competencies for which hospice medical directors (HMD) can benefit through focused development efforts
2. Discuss methods of fostering the development of physicians as they work in an interdisciplinary team setting
3. Compare the benefits and challenges involved in working with HMDs from different training and practice backgrounds
In today’s changing hospice environment, there are increased responsibilities and opportunities for hospice medical directors (HMD).  This session will describe the competencies necessary for HMDs in order to meet new Conditions of Participation, and optimize patient outcomes while helping enhance operating efficiencies. Ways to ensure that HMDs accurately and compliantly determine hospice eligibility and relatedness will be discussed, as will techniques to monitor appropriate pharmacy utilization. Their increased responsibilities must be balanced with the HMD’s clinical tasks of directing medical care, and working with the interdisciplinary team to communicate with patients, families, and referral sources in order to achieve appropriate goals of care. A process for the selection, supervision, and mentoring of physicians will be reviewed by the presenters, who  have decades of experience involving hundreds of HMDs.
