The need for non-hospice palliative care is enormous. Many hospices are rising to the challenge of building services for patients not yet eligible for hospice, but sustaining these services can be difficult. Now more than ever before, payers and other risk-bearing entities are looking for strategies to improve access to palliative care while reducing costly emergency room visits and hospitalizations. In this session, you will hear an overview of the steps necessary to find the right financial partners to support your palliative care service. Findings from the Center to Advance Palliative Care’s Innovative Payer Initiative will be discussed with an early innovator in this field. Learners will identify strategies for startup, outreach, piloting and ultimately sustaining the palliative care service through partnership with payers.
Learning Objectives:
1. Assess whether and how to start a palliative care service
2. Create a strategy for approaching payers or risk-bearing organizations to support a palliative care service
3. Conceptualize a pilot and demonstrate value to financial partners
