Monroe Room (Washington Hilton) - Concourse Level
Faculty:
Elizabeth Dost, RN, Senior Executive Healthcare Consultant; Emerging Industries, Taunton, MA and Maryam Qayum, MD, Board Certified PM & R Physician, Humble, TX
This session is designed to promote an understanding of the endocannabinoid system, both in homeostasis and theoretically, that deficiencies in the system lead to chronic disease states. Faculty will discuss how cannabis enriches health and improves the lives of hospice patients. Discussion will include both the science and the entourage effect of the cannabis plant, along with pertinent symptom management. Due to federal prohibition and with more than half of the states having medical use laws or those laws pending, hospice staff is facing the increasing use of cannabis by patients. This session will discuss implications for staff who are asked best use advice which includes methods of ingestion, onset of action, side effects, strains, and what hospice management must know to advise and address these growing concerns.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the endocannabinoid system and the two types of cannabis which lead to hybrid strains
2. Discuss how state laws vary, what patients may do and how that effects treatment and hospice care planning
3. Explain plant action, hybrid action, the right route, onset of action, duration of action, and timing of cannabis administration
