When persons are suffering, holding therapeutic space for them to experience their emotions and clarify their own meaning without stepping into that space too soon with the clinician’s own words and suggestions can be a challenge. Personal areas of discomfort, such as being in the presence of persons in deep pain or whose grief manifests as conflict and/or anger, may add to the challenge. Ongoing research points to the importance of clinicians’ ability to provide presence and empathic attunement in therapeutic relationships. Enhancing the practitioner’s abilities in mindfulness, improved self-awareness, practices of silence and deep listening may benefit even the most advanced practitioner. Join this session to increase your inter- and intra-personal competencies and skills in presence and empathic attunement.

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss the importance of presence and attunement in healing relationships
2. Analyze what underlies personal impulses to re-direct, manage or shy away from patients’ and families’ emotions
3. Apply practical exercises to remain present and attuned with all persons in all circumstances
