Reflections: An Oral History Project

Thursday, October 6, 2011: 1:30 PM-2:30 PM
Primary Presenter:
Turner West, MPH, MTS
Area of Emphasis: Volunteer Management and Leadership
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the importance of oral history for patients and families
2. Integrate aspects of oral history interviews into a hospice volunteer program
3. Develop guidelines for conducting an oral history interview
Life reviews and oral history interviews are invaluable tools for hospice clinicians and volunteers. While often these conversations take place informally, Hospice of the Bluegrass (HOB) has developed a formalized training for volunteers on conducting an oral history. This session focuses on the partnership between Hospice of the Bluegrass and the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky. Through this initiative volunteers are trained on interviewing techniques and provided recording equipment to use during interviews. After interviews, patients and families receive CDs of the recordings and the recording becomes part of a digital archive.
