Masks of Hospice Professionals Grieving a Personal Death Loss

Thursday, October 6, 2011: 1:30 PM-2:30 PM
Primary Presenter:
Barb Kamlet, MA, NCC
Area of Emphasis: Bereavement
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and explore unique needs and challenges of hospice professionals grieving a personal death loss
2. Identify and explore barriers that are created by us and by others that inhibit our ability to work through our grief
3. Create a grief mask that depicts what we feel on the inside compared to what we show on the outside to those who might provide us with grief support
Simply by virtue of our work as hospice professionals, our grief needs and challenges after the death of our own family member, friend or co-worker are unique. Do we expect too much of ourselves during our grief or maybe not enough? What do others expect of us and how is that communicated or imposed? Is the support we receive from family, friends and co-workers what we want and what we need? Most importantly, do we communicate on the outside what we feel on the inside to get the support we need so that we can continue our working with patients/families? During this session, we will explore unique challenges and needs about personal grief, create grief masks to depict what we feel and provide support to each other.
