Are You Out of Your Mind? Effectively Managing Terminal Restlessness, Behavioral Disturbances and Delirium

Thursday, October 6, 2011: 2:45 PM-3:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Myra Belgeri, PharmD, CGP, BCPS, FASCP
Area of Emphasis: Clinical/Medical Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the differences between terminal restlessness, behavioral disturbances and delirium in the hospice/palliative care patient
2. Identify various factors that may cause or contribute to terminal restlessness, behavioral disturbances and delirium
3. Discuss treatment strategies for the management of terminal restlessness, behavioral disturbances and delirium
Terminal restlessness, behavioral disturbances and delirium are often difficult to distinguish because their clinical manifestations overlap, and their presentation may vary between patients. As these symptoms occur in hospice and palliative care patients, they may cause unnecessary anxiety and distress for the patient, caregivers and family members. Through this interactive, case-based presentation, the audience will learn to differentiate between these end-of-life symptoms, practice identifying potentially reversible underlying causes and contributing factors and learn effective strategies for the management of these symptoms. Clinical pearls on the appropriate selection of pharmacologic therapy for each of these symptoms will be discussed.
