Strengthening Teams Through Reflective Reading And Discussion: Exploring Values, Deepening Connections, Responding Imaginatively

Thursday, October 6, 2011: 2:45 PM-3:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Catherine Deamant, MD
Co-presenters:
Jennifer Smith, MD , Orlanda Mackie, MD and Elizabeth Lynn, PhD
Area of Emphasis: Interdisciplinary Team
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the practice of reflective reading and discussion in the workplace for an interdisciplinary team
2. Participate in a facilitated reading and discussion
3. Discuss logistics, planning and facilitation of reflective discussions
This structured practice, based on member-led discussions of short, thought-provoking readings, is adopted from the Project on Civic Reflection. It provides a means of reflecting on core values, thinking more deeply about our choices and responding more imaginatively to the challenges of our shared work.  Participants will learn how to choose readings and prepare questions to quickly guide a group to deep and meaningful conversation. Teams may choose to devote one meeting each month to this fruitful practice, with facilitator responsibilities rotated among the group. A toolkit will be provided to participants containing facilitator guidelines and sample readings and questions.
