Interventions for Children and Adolescents During a Parent's Advanced Illness

Friday, October 7, 2011: 1:15 PM-2:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Grace Christ, PhD, MA
Area of Emphasis: Bereavement
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify sources of stress for children and families during a parent's advanced illness, including traumatic aspects
2. Identify developmentally-specific ways children experience parental terminal illness and ways to integrate this knowledge in intervention approaches
3. Identify at least two intervention models that could be integrated into hospice work with children and adolescents whose parent is dying
This session will provide an overview of the evidence-base for interventions with children and adolescents whose parent has an advanced illness, including those receiving hospice care. Information and case studies will be drawn from two intervention studies: a parent guidance approach with 88 cancer patients treated at a cancer center and a family-focused intervention with children and adolescents who experienced traumatic loss of a parent in the 9/11/01 attacks. Specific guidelines for integrating developmental knowledge into interventions will be provided as well as core competencies and practice guidelines for doing this work.
