Saturday, October 8, 2011: 11:45 AM-12:45 PM
Primary Presenter:
Sharon Bigger, RN, CHPN
Area of Emphasis: Access and Outreach
Learning Objectives:
1. Define Salmon’s three key transformative aspects of a positive caregiving experience
2. List three ways each discipline can support the primary caregiver’s personal transformation
3. Describe three differences in positive-based versus negative-based support for caregivers
Ample research shows the need to empower and educate caregivers, who are both providers and recipients of end-of-life care.  Current approaches include alleviating negative factors such as stress and burden. However, new research shows the need for a more comprehensive approach which emphasizes positive aspects of caregiving, such as personal transformation. This insightful session expounds on current research findings and is designed to empower all members of the interdisciplinary team by teaching key tools to support the caregiver’s personal transformation, tap the primary caregiver as a key resource in positive patient outcomes and build alliances for hospice in the community at-large.
