Primary Presenter:

Co-Presenter:
Terre L. Mirsch, RN, BSN, CHPN, CHPCA
Area of Emphasis: Clinical/Medical Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Define and differentiate the provision of alternative, complementary and integrative therapy in end-of-life care
2. Identify common holistic therapies used in the hospice plan of care, staff qualifications and options for complementary therapy oversight in a hospice program
3. Identify key components in Complementary Therapy Program development that ensure professional, goal driven access to non pharmacological modalities
Alternative and complementary therapy use is an increasingly valued service being offered in  hospice and palliative care programs.  A 2009 published survey out of Bastyr University in Washington State demonstrated that 86% of the State’s hospices offered some form of complementary therapy to patients and caregivers.  Most hospices access complementary therapy services through the volunteer program.  More hospices are committing to the expansion of services by additionally hiring therapists, dually certifying IDT members, and/or creating complementary therapy program coordinator positions.    This workshop will address commonly asked questions about program development and the use of the holistic therapies that promote patient and family life quality, effective coping, as well as bringing new IDT options for providing opportunities for peace and symptom support in the dying process.
