StoryCorps and the Power of Storytelling

Thursday, October 6, 2011: 10:15 AM-11:45 AM
Primary Presenter:
Perri Chinalai, MA
Co-Presenter:
Adam Wilson
Area of Emphasis: Education
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize the impact and benefits of the reminiscence experience for oneself and families.
2. Determine what questions need be asked when designing a reminiscence program.
3. Discuss StoryCorps’ approach to facilitating supportive interviews with individuals who have memory loss and/or life-threatening conditions and how to adapt these best practices into programming.
This session will focus on the creation and development of StoryCorps, an independent non-profit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening.  In July 2010, StoryCorps launched the Legacy Initiative to support and encourage people with life-threatening conditions to record, preserve and share their stories. Informed largely by the Memory Loss Initiative - a program that has collaborated with more than 180 organizations serving aging populations and people with Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury - the Legacy Initiative has already provided insight into the powerful effects of the interview experience on participants and listeners.
